I often compare an in-house digital marketing team to a game of chess. You cannot play chess with only the main pieces. You need the soldiers too, because every piece has a role to play. After five years of working across multiple digital marketing agencies and companies, I’m astonished by how often I’ve come across situations where one person is expected to handle everything. For a proper in-house digital marketing team, these are the key positions I would consider, as per my experience:
-
Digital Marketing Manager / Head of Digital Marketing: Handles the overall strategy, budgets, targets, campaigns and team coordination.
-
SEO Specialist / SEO Manager: Takes care of keyword research, on-page SEO, technical SEO, link building and organic growth.
-
Content Writer / Content Strategist: Creates website content, blogs, landing pages, ad copy and other written communication.
-
Social Media Manager: Manages social media platforms, content calendars, publishing, engagement and community management.
-
Performance Marketing / PPC Specialist: Runs and optimises Google Ads, Meta Ads and other paid campaigns.
-
Graphic Designer: Creates social media creatives, advertisements, banners, infographics and other visual assets.
-
Video Editor / Motion Graphics Designer: Produces reels, promotional videos, advertisements and other video content.
-
Web Developer / WordPress Developer: Handles website maintenance, landing pages, technical fixes and integrations.
-
Email Marketing / CRM Specialist: Manages email campaigns, automation and lead nurturing.
-
Digital Analytics Specialist / Marketing Data Analyst: Handles GA4, conversion tracking, attribution and performance reporting.
-
CRO Specialist: Works on landing pages, forms and user journeys to improve conversions.
-
Digital PR / Outreach Specialist: Handles online PR, publisher outreach, partnerships and brand mentions.
Can one person handle all of this? At a basic level, yes, but not particularly well once the workload grows. I have seen generalists become overwhelmed when SEO, paid campaigns, content, social media and website work all land on their desk. For a serious in-house operation, I recommend giving each major function a dedicated owner, even if some roles are combined initially.
